The Raven Tree

I wrote "The Raven Tree" while painting an apartment building in Eldred, Pennsylvania.  Just outside the back bedroom window, this very tree was a favorite perch for the biggest, blackest crows I'd ever seen.  The poem is from my audio book, Until Death Do Impart.

The raven tree

grows scaly & sick

with plenty of perches

for witch birds.

Bark peels like

leper's skin from

its bent trunk

& bare limbs shine

like exposed bone.

The raven tree quivers

with the slightest breeze

as if plagued by ague

or some strange

nervous disorder.
