"After Our Chihuahua Disappeared" was first published in Shadow Feast Magazine and later appeared on my audio book CD, Until Death Do Impart. The poem deals with every parent's worst fear.

Our next-door neighbor was

an evil-eyed old crone.

Her skin was jaundiced,

and her hair was unkempt

as a briar patch.

She bumbled about her woodlot

harvesting choke cherries

and grotesque toadstools.

Wearing leis of poison ivy,

she swept her walk endlessly,

hissing gibberish.

Although she kept no pets,

she reeked of catnip and dog urine.

After our Chihuahua disappeared,

I ordered the kids to avoid her yard.

As a precaution, I read them

"Hansel and Gretel."
